Protective Magical Measures: The Witch’s Home
“The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”
– Maya Angelou
Magical Safety and Protection
Witches and Pagans living in urban environments, including being barraged by the neighbor’s “bad vibes.” People are carrying a lot of tension and emotional baggage these days, and in the city, there are lots of people. You are not going to want to cast spells daily in the fight for spiritual peace, or making sure you’re not bothered by Ghosts. So what kinds of metaphysical protection can you seek?
Energized Magic Oils
Use the vibrations in specially prepared oils for keeping unwanted energies at bay, or for reinforcing protective wards that are already in place as an Herb Witch might. The additional benefit of this approach is the subtle aromatherapy impact. This gives everyone entering your home a sense of comfort. I call this the “ahh” effect. Visitors sit down and almost immediately relax, subconsciously knowing they’re sheltered somehow from the outside world.
Protective Herbs for Defending Oils
To make such an oil for yourself, begin with a base of quality oil whose texture and smell is pleasing. During a full moon (for thorough protection) warm one cup oil with one teaspoon of any (or all) of the following:
- myrrh
- sandalwood
- anise
- basil
- rosemary
- bay
- cinnamon
- dill
- fennel
- heather
- lavender
- sage
- marigold
- mint
- pine
- rose
When you make your blends, the basic measurement is one tablespoon (tbsp) of chosen herb to eight ounces (8 oz) of water. Let the herb(s) steep in the oil until it smells strongly of them, then strain and keep in a dark, airtight container for use. If you wish, leave this container in the light of a noonday sun for an hour or so (to banish darkness). Whenever you feel your protection needs a little reinforcement, dab this on every door, window, and other openings in your home. This symbolically closes the “open paths” into your house to all but those spirits and energies you wish.
Amuletic Awareness
Use specially prepared, and carefully placed household amulets. By definition an amulet is a preventative; it protects you against malevolent intentions and danger. Ancient shamans often used precious stones, metal, or plants as amulets. All of these options hold potential if you can keep the chosen amulet from being handled or otherwise disturbed once it is created.
The Asian Witch uses magic mirrors or any highly polished surface as amulets. Begin by getting four small mirrors (one for each quarter of your home). Next, take a little of the protective oil that you made on the pointer finger of your strong hand. Trace a counterclockwise, concentric circle from the perimeter of each mirror into its center point saying,
“Absorbed within, all evil, all dim. Reflect away from me, all negativity.”
Keep repeating this phrase until you reach the center point, then draw your finger directly up off the mirror’s surface. Put these facing outward in the four directional regions of your living space. This way, the mirror doesn’t take up excess space, and its surface is poised to collect or turn away unwanted energies from all directions.
Simple But Still Powerful Magickal Protection
These three illustrations confirm that spiritual safety measures don’t have to be overly time-consuming, or take up a lot of space. Use these ideas as a place to start if you don’t have any way of presently safeguarding your home. Keep your spiritual eyes and ears alert. When life begins beating down the shield you’ve put in place, reinforce, or rebuild it. Remember: A Witch’s, Pagan’s and Seer’s home is his or her spiritual castle. Dig that mote however you need. Nothing in this world or the next has the right to impose on that sanctuary without your permission.
